“When you need help and no one will give it, help yourself.” Village men were unable to earn enough, so Gabina called their 57 wives together. They formed a cooperative, grew pine trees and sold the seedlings. When their well started to run dry, they set a bicycle atop it as a pump. All her 11 children (and all 20 grandchildren, except five who are too young) have gone, or are going, to school. Her wish? That their lives will be less difficult than hers.
